tYPES OF CARE

Wherever you’re at, find support

Everyone’s journey looks different, and wherever you are right now, you’re not alone. Vermont offers a wide range of services to help you stay safer, get treatment, or support your recovery. VT Helplink is here to guide you toward the care that fits your needs and to connect you with trusted resources in your community.

Treatment is one path towards recovery and can help you stop using alcohol or other drugs or help you use them in a safer way. Treatment combines medical care, like helping you through withdrawal symptoms or starting medication that helps with cravings, with services and tools that help you learn coping skills and manage substance use – either in an inpatient or outpatient setting.

Recovery from substance use disorder is an ongoing process of making changes to feel better, live on your own terms, and move towards your goals – whatever that looks like for you. Every recovery journey is unique, and could involve treatment, support groups, recovery coaching, or being part of recovery communities.

Prevention is about stopping harmful drug and alcohol use before it happens. It’s also about creating the conditions that help people stay healthy. Prevention can include stopping overdoses, recurrence of substance use disorders (often referred to as ‘relapse’), misinformation, and stigma. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach, and every Vermonter can play a role.

Harm reduction services offer both practical tools and compassionate support to help people who use drugs, including alcohol, stay safer and healthier. These services are about meeting people where they are and focus on wellbeing, preventing injury and disease, and reducing the risk of overdose. From syringe exchange programs to fentanyl test strips, naloxone (or Narcan® Nasal Spray), and more, help is here when you need it.
